Robert received a classical education and proved to be an able classical scholar; proud of his knowledge of ancient history and literature reflecting the attention he gave to Latin inscriptions and archaeological details in his art. He spent many years in Italy before returning to Paris to receive distinguished recognition by the Academie Royale. His paintings demonstrated that he was not only a literal observer, but also a poetic interpreter of both landscape and views of Rome, Paris and the countryside of the Ile-de-France. He enjoyed the patronage of leading collectors, members of the aristocracy and was appointed "Designer of Royal Gardens" by Louis XVI for his work in the re-planning of the park at Versailles.
