Louis Tosque
(French, 1696 1772)

Louis, Grand Dauphin de France (1739)
Inventory Number: 1124
Oil on canvas.
31.5 x 25 inches (80 x 64 cm)
This is one of a number of preparatory works for the large, full-length portrait of Dauphin Louis, signed and dated 1739 and now in the Louvre, Paris. Louis (1729-1765), son of Louis XV of France and Marie Leszczynska, father of Louis XVI, never succeeded to the throne. Here he is shown in a lilac velvet robe stitched with gold, wearing over his cuirass the blue ribbon of the Ordre du Saint-Esprit and a white scarf. The elegant colours and emphasized grace of the pose, despite the official grandeur of the portrait, hint at the influence of the rococo style.
Size can be commissioned smaller or larger.
Collection of the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
